I thought those cheap plastic planters from the big box store were a total waste of money.
I bought a bunch of the $5 ones last spring because I needed a lot of pots for my new herb garden and didn't want to spend a fortune. I was sure they'd crack in the sun after one season or just look really cheap. But honestly, after a full year outside through a hot summer and a wet winter here, they are still holding up perfectly. The plastic is thicker than I thought, and the drainage holes actually work well. I even moved a few around when I redid a bed and they didn't break. I'm actually kind of impressed and feel silly for almost spending way more on ceramic. Has anyone else had a cheap garden product surprise them like this?

Your point about the plastic being thicker is so true, my neighbor said the same thing last week.

Honestly, loganl22 is totally right about the garden myths. We all get tricked into buying the priciest stuff. Tbh, the cheap pots work just as well if you take care of them. It's like the whole industry banks on us not figuring it out. Saves a ton of money once you realize it.

Right? I grabbed a few of those for some annual flowers on a total whim, and they're still going strong three years later. The color hasn't even faded that much, which shocked me. You really do get stuck on the idea that you need the heavy, expensive stuff for it to last. Makes you wonder what other garden myths we're all buying into, literally.
