Mulch always looked untidy to me, but it saved my roses this summer.

I skipped mulching for ages because I thought it was just extra work. After adding a layer, the soil stayed damp and my roses bloomed longer in the heat. What backyard hack surprised you with good results?

So what kind of mulch did you end up using?

About mulch looking untidy, it's a trade-off I'll take. My garden stayed alive during that heat wave. A little mess beats dead plants.

Wait, @sandra486, you're asking what type after it survived that killer heat?
