My neighbor insisted his $40 sod cutter was better than renting one, and I think he was right

Had to tear out a patch of old grass about 200 square feet last month. Everyone on this sub told me to rent a power sod cutter from Home Depot for $75 a day. My neighbor Bob said just buy a manual one from Harbor Freight for $40. I laughed it off. After fighting with a shovel for an hour on the first strip, I caved and got his. Took me maybe 2 hours total to do the whole thing by hand. No gas, no noise, no hauling a machine back. Anyone else find these old school hand tools actually work better than the big power stuff?

My friend Sarah had the same debate with her dad about dethatching rakes versus the power ones. She bought the manual one for like $30 and finished her whole yard in an afternoon with no fumes or loud noise. I even borrowed it for my small lawn and it was way more satisfying than the time I rented a power aerator that kept bogging down on wet spots. Sometimes the simple tool just wins because there's less to go wrong, you know? I'd take the manual sod cutter every time for anything under 300 square feet.

You know, that's exactly the kind of thing I've been noticing more and more. There's a real satisfaction in using a simple tool that just works, without needing a battery or a motor to do the job for you.

Power tools save my back though. Manual stuff is fine until your knees give out.
