PSA: My new raised garden bed collapsed after one good rain
I built it last month using untreated pine 2x8s and thought it would hold. We got a heavy storm two days ago, and the whole side wall just gave way, spilling about 15 bags of soil mix into the yard. I didn't use any corner braces, just screws, and the wet ground made the wood bow out. Had to shovel everything back and rebuild with pressure-treated posts at each corner. Has anyone else had a bed fail like this, and what's your fix?

Watch how many things get built just well enough to pass an inspection.

Isn't it crazy how the inspection checklist basically becomes the highest goal? @grace_knight70, I've seen stuff where you can tell they measured exactly to the code and not a millimeter more. It's like they build to the minimum standard on paper instead of aiming for something that will actually last. You just know those are the spots that will have problems first. It saves them money now but costs everyone else later.

Tell me about it. My old apartment had a balcony railing that was just high enough to pass code, but it always felt wobbly and unsafe. You could see the screws were barely in there. It's the same with cheap flooring that looks fine until you move a couch and find huge gaps. Builders get their sign-off and disappear, leaving us to deal with the creaks and leaks later.
