That neighbor who built a cedar planter box next to my fence changed how I approach joints

Guy across the alley in Denver showed me how he cut his miter joints with just a handsaw and a cheap miter box, and after trying it myself on a small raised bed I realized I was overcomplicating my cuts with power tools.

That "overcomplicating my cuts" part hit home, I started just using a speed square and jigsaw for everything and my joints actually got tighter.

Wait, you switched to a speed square and jigsaw for EVERYTHING? I did the EXACT same thing about a year ago and it was a game changer for me too. I was using all these fancy tools and spending forever on setups, but my joints were still garbage. Going back to basics with just a square and a sharp jigsaw blade made me slow down and actually think about each cut. It's funny how adding MORE tools can make your work worse instead of better. I bet your shop is way less cluttered now too, that's always a bonus.
