Visited a community garden in Austin and saw a weird debate break out
I went to this community garden off South Congress last weekend to check out their raised beds. One guy was pushing for all native plants only, saying anything else is just wasting water and attracting pests. But then this older lady pointed out her tomato vines and said without non-natives we'd have no food. I mean, both sides made good points. Do you guys lean more towards native-only or mixing in some veggies and flowers from other places?

Just mix em. Put natives along the edges for structure and pollinators, then tuck veggies in the middle beds. That way you get the best of both without the drama.

My neighbor tried that exact setup last spring. She planted wild bergamot along the fence line and hid her zucchini and tomatoes in between. The only drama was her dog digging up the marigolds to bury a bone. Now she just calls it "free range gardening.
