Bought a cheap drywall lift off a guy for $150 and it nearly took my thumb off
Saw it on a jobsite board, some guy moving out of state. It was a no-name brand, looked a little rusty but the legs moved. First day using it on a ceiling, I'm cranking it up and the whole gear mechanism just strips out. The arm drops like a rock, pinning my hand against the stud. Bruised my thumb so bad it was purple for a week. Had to call my helper to help me muscle the sheet down, wasted half a day. I thought I was saving money, but it cost me in time and almost a digit. Now I'm looking at proper ones, but they're four times the price. Anyone have a lead on a solid used lift that won't fail on me?

Cheap tools always end up costing more in the long run, either in time or blood. I've seen so many guys get burned trying to save a buck on gear. It's a hard lesson to learn the hard way.
