Appreciation post: A client in Austin taught me a lesson about sensitive skin
I was at a big skincare conference in Austin about three months ago, and I had a booth doing quick skin checks. A woman came up and her skin looked really red and tight, almost like a bad sunburn. She told me, 'Every time I try a new serum, my face feels like it's on fire.' I was about to suggest a calming toner I always use, but I stopped myself. Instead, I just asked her to walk me through her exact morning routine, step by step. Turns out, she was using a strong vitamin C, a physical scrub, and a retinol cream all before 9 AM. Seeing that reaction in person, not just hearing about it in a textbook, really hit home. It made me change how I start every new client consult now. I spend the first ten minutes just listening to their full routine without jumping to product suggestions. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where a simple conversation changed your whole approach?

My sister wrecked her skin barrier last year trying to follow a ten-step routine from some influencer. Her cheeks were peeling and raw for weeks. She finally saw a dermatologist who told her to use exactly three things: a gentle cleanser, a basic moisturizer, and sunscreen. It cleared up in days. People really do overcomplicate it trying to fix problems they don't even have.

Read a blog post that said most skin irritation comes from mixing active ingredients. Your story proves that point perfectly. Just listening first is the best fix.

Man, that story hits close to home... it's wild how much damage we can do by just adding more stuff. I see so many people online layering five different acids before breakfast and wondering why their face hurts. Your shift to just listening first is so smart, it cuts through all the noise. It's a good reminder that the best fix is often taking things away, not adding more.
