The yogurt lid trick stopped my weekly sour cream surprise
Last month I found a container of sour cream from April hiding behind a bag of frozen peas. It looked fine on top but the bottom was a science project. I started writing the date on the lid with a sharpie every time I open something now. Also I put new stuff at the back and old stuff up front. Took me 30 seconds and I haven't tossed a mystery container since. Anyone else do the lid date thing or am I the only one who used to play fridge roulette?

The sharpie ink can smear off if the lid gets any moisture on it, which happens a lot with sour cream. I switched to painter's tape on top of the lid instead and write the date on that. Peels right off when you finish the container and no scrub. Also worth marking the date you opened it, not just the date you bought it, since the clock starts once it's open.
