Warning: my trip home exposed a friendship I thought was solid

Went back to Columbus last month and my best friend from college spent the whole weekend on her phone, barely looked up when I told her about my mom's surgery. I finally asked if she even wanted me there and she said 'sorry, I'm just tired' but it was 10am. Has anyone else had a friend who stopped making eye contact during the big stuff, and did you try to fix it or just let it fade?

Four hours on a phone when you haven't seen someone in two years is rude, sure, but it's also just what people do now. My cousin does the same thing every Thanksgiving and nobody's calling it a friendship crisis. You told her about your mom's surgery, she said she was tired, and you took that as a sign the whole bond is broken. Maybe she actually was tired, or hungover, or dealing with her own stuff she didn't want to dump on you. I'd give it another shot on a random Tuesday phone call before you write off a decade of history over one bad weekend.
